Remembering Ben Herden

It is with great sadness that we share the devastating news of Ben Herden, U11 Div 1 Co-Coach, who died peacefully in his sleep last week. Ben has been in the coaching ranks at the Saints for the past four seasons, helping impart his broad AFL knowledge and expertise on all kids that were lucky enough to be under his guidance.

In his playing days, Ben was an exceptional footballer who played Teal Cup and represented NSW. His AFL nous and the ability he had to read players was second to none. Ben always conveyed his messages to players in a calm, respectful, encouraging way, and took great pride in the improvement in each of them.

Ben was selfless in sharing his time and knowledge, he wore a range of bibs over the years at the Saints, coaching for Tommy’s team, often goal umpiring for Jacks, he was always supporting our social events and fundraisers, first to put up his hand to help.  He was a good mate to so many.

We will always remember Ben for his cheerful smile and friendly demeanour. He was always willing to help others, giving freely of his time and energy.

The wider Saints family send our heartfelt condolences to Kirstie and three boys, Finlay, Thomas and Jack. They have been dealt the most unexplainable of losses, of a husband and father of the highest quality. He will be so sorely missed by so many.

Whilst we won’t have Ben’s future presence at Heffron, we’re sure he’ll be forever looking down with a big grin, encouraging all Sainters to give their all.

Rest in peace Ben, we will never forget you.
